ASSISTANCE

The Housing Choice Voucher Program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides Direct Assistance for Heating and Cooling; Emergency Crisis Assistance Program (ECAP) for Heating and Cooling; and Supplemental Funding for the Low-Income Weatherization Program (WAP). LIHEAP is a Federal emergency assistance block grant funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) provides home weatherization assistance for low-income families, particularly for the elderly, people with disabilities and children, by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. WAP is coordinated through community action agencies which are responsible for each of the state's 46 counties.

Customers may be eligible for one bill reduction per 12 month period. Customers that meet financial hardship requirements may also qualify for assistance from the City’s Customer Assistance Program even if they have received a bill reduction.

Palmetto CAP’s General Emergency Assistance Program (or GEAP) provides financial assistance to households who have encountered an unexpected financial hardship. Service include assistance with rent, prescription medication, protection from violence, disaster relief, food and more.
